Review of Brooklyn (2015) by K Nife C — 04 Apr 2016
Visuals weren't distracting at all. The literary depth was non-existent. They manage to craft a movie about a boring young woman in a very exciting time who goes through extraordinary social pressure to be mediocre.
The film held my attention up until the third act where everything turned into a spotlight on someone with seemingly no moral compass. Being emotionally susceptible to a less than dashing Domnhall Gleeson after getting married does not make a strong female lead.
I wouldn't even suggest this movie to elderly women (who seem to be the target audience) because there are a few beyond titillating scenes. Acting and cinematography are fine, and I can't fault the makers for this.
I don't understand why this was nominated for best picture, however, except for that maybe one of the academy members was in an iron lung. I know how to eat spaghetti like an Italian woman now, though.
So that's nice.
