Review of Brooklyn (2015) by Amanda C — 29 May 2016
A beautiful film about home and belonging, at the heart of Brooklyn is a solid performance from Saoirse Ronan. She bring an intellegence and grounding to the role of a woman who is torn between two places.
It's also nice to see the trope of women representing different lives swapped out for men. They may exist as love interests for Eilis, and are more developed than women in their position, but at their core they exist as physical incarnations of the different lives Eilis can have.
In the end, Brooklyn is a story about a young woman coming into her own, on her own terms, which is something we so rarely get to see.
