Review of Brooklyn (2015) by Al S — 23 Feb 2016
Despite very good acting by the main character, this movie was disappointing to me. A not believable love story due to miscasting of her Italian American love interest, an immature very young man who just lacked depth and gravitas, perhaps better suited to a remake of Grease.
They seemed completely mismatched. The movie drags interminably and features cliches of uber Irish matrons and lads. Nick Hornby wrote a meh script that features little to no character development and this is seemingly based on a novel whose premise is turn your back on your family for sexual liberation in the New World.
Like the layers in a swirled yeast bread, the whole enterprise is permeated by cliches from conception to execution. It is better than much Hollywood flotsam, but if you have shaky leg syndrome, this might aggravate it.
