Review of Bronson (2009) by Spring M — 20 Aug 2011
Woah. Wow and double wow. Totally original and different from anything I've ever seen. The only movie I can imagine to compare it to is A Clockwork Orange. Dark? Yes. Violent? Check. But the character is so well-played, and the directing so spot-on that the result is far less bleak than you may think -- wholly entertaining, utterly riveting, surprisingly funny, and even "warm-hearted" in a twisted sort of way.
This isn't empty sensationalism for shock value; you will actually like and root for this character. Tom Hardy's performance is a spellbinding tour de force. I literally did not recognize him from his role in Inception.
A film like this is a risky undertaking, but the laser-focused direction succeeds in keeping us on the surest of footing throughout every second on-screen.
