Review of Bronson (2009) by Matthew M — 06 Sep 2011
A 90 minute journey into the mind of Charles Bronson, an insane and very dangerous individual, is made to be as violent and mental as we believe he is. There's no remorse, no reason, and no cause for anything that happens - no backstory, no explanation - because the film doesn't need one, simply because Bronson doesn't need one; it's as intense and rage-filled as watching bare-knuckle boxing, and, at the end, the equivilant of competing.
It's hard to watch, disturbing yet curiously gripping and remote - there's nothing about it that's welcoming, nothing formulaic or comforting, and yet maybe that's the reason we watch it and enjoy it - we're out of our comfort zones.
