Review of Bronson (2009) by Seth U — 25 Mar 2012
Bronson is a fascinating and considerably more entertaining than expected portait of a serial prisoner. This is truly all about Tom Hardy and his amazing portrayal of the title character. The film rests solely on his shoulders and he delivers.
Nicolas Winding Refn's direction is also exceptional, telling the story of Micheal Peterson, how he became Charles Bronson, and his journey through the penal system. The movie is well paced and doesn't really get dull, but it does jump around a bit which makes it a bit tough to follow at points.
There also seems to be pretty big jumps in time, but I imagine it is done for purposes of keeping the story moving and doesn't take away from the film. I liked the idea of having Bronson himself narrating the film and the bits with him on stage in the theatre give an interesting insight to how his mind works and his never-ending quest for celebrity status.
Definately a well made film, and there are stylistic similarities to Refn's newest film, Drive. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who enjoys true crime films, and those that enjoy films like Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and Stone's Natural Born Killers.
Definately worth a look, but not a film for everyone.
