Review of Bronson (2009) by Jeffrey M — 11 Jun 2012
Bronson succeeds at being stylized, inventive, funny, dark, and undeniably depraved, while at the same time keeping a cohesive narrative. The film doesn't get bogged down or gimmicky in its presentation, as so many other films of its nature try to do, but instead always remains true to the character study that it is. In this way, the enigmatic nature of Bronson and the definite undertones of the film did remind me a bit of Clockwork Orange, but in a more entertaining way. The film doesn't opt for easy explanations or resolution, but actually presents a fascinating, yet troubling, look at a real individual. Of course, at the end of the day, the entire thing rests on Tom Hardy, who completely inhibits the character, anchoring every scene with his characteristic brooding intensity and charisma.
4/5 Stars.
