I think director tried to show something else than sex between 2 young men. Maybe it was the simple experience of being in love, how crude it could be even for gay guys and how difficult it turns when you are like that in a country full of machos and all the stereotypes that twists around it.
Maybe also he was trying to make us know that words are a plus extra. Like Saussuere used to say: there's no sign if theres no interpeter who decodes the meaning.
