Review of Broken Flowers (2005) by Nick O — 15 Jun 2010
Certain types of deprecating quirk are able to simultaneously poke fun at Hollywood cliches while remaining fully original. Though the plot of Broken Flowers isn't too swift with heartbroken admiralty, Jim Jarmusch's dramatic comedy finds itself often trapped in the same endless cycle Bill Murray's Don Johnston's has an entire movie based around.
Part Lost in Translation, part Sideways, Broken Flowers is a sharp, modest indie achievement that comes back around with a harsher bite even once you've already been knocked to the floor.
