Review of Broken Flowers (2005) by Philip S — 21 Aug 2010
THIS movie won a Palme d'Or? Really? Huh. Well, I'd heard good things about it, but it was a bit of a disappointment. Bill Murray plays it REALLY deadpan which seems to be his hallmark these days.
The script is thin and the movie tries to have that typical "indie vibe" to it but fails in that it lacks charm - it's simply slow. The direction is terrible. Who edited this? There are so many useless "business" shots, bizarre fades to black and don't even get me started on the last 30 seconds.
Is anyone outside of Bill Murray's immediate family supposed to get the significance of that long, odd shot? I had no idea what it meant until I did an internet search afterwards; and considering I thought the shot had a homoerotic vibe to it.
.. Yikes. Jeffrey Wright is the highlight.
