Review of Broken Flowers (2005) by Jerome K — 11 Nov 2011
Bill Murray seems to love taking roles that call for his character to have a subtle and understated sadness, such as in Lost In Translation. And like that film, I'm not sure what even to call this one.
Some call it a romantic comedy. Some call it a drama. In some ways, it's neither because both aspects seem muted, and I guess that's the point. This film is really more of a character piece, showing us the life of Murray's character Don and the lives of people in his life both past and present.
Due to a revelation, he goes on a cross-country road trip to find some answers. The film is filled with splendidly nuanced performances. Those who like to analyze and discuss literary works may enjoy this film, because there is a lot of vagueness and open endedness that lends itself to interpretation.
If you don't like that kind of thing, you might find yourself frustrated and/or bored, so you are probably better off skipping it.
