Review of Broken English: Three Songs by Marianne Faithfull (1979) by Robert B — 05 Dec 2007
A young woman (Posey) struggles with her neuroses and relationships.
Cassavetes has really captured a very real, very well constructed character here. Posey delivers a solid performance that really shows the human nuance (good and bad). I believed her struggles, and almost identified with a lot of the assumptions and personal flaws she made. From a sheer writing/direction/acting standpoint this film is really quite impressive. It's pacing is bang on, the writing is believable, and everyone hands in a solid performance. My only criticism is that it's not particularly interesting to watch. While it is a good character piece, it's not played out in a manner that makes you want to know more or see how it ends. Some work on creating scenes that reveal character traits, while keeping the audience engaged/originality would have gone a long way.
