Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Sam48 M — 24 Dec 2009
Almodovar's work in Broken Embraces is magnificent. Oftentimes when films have complicated story lines character development takes a back seat and we leave feeling confused and unchallenged emotionally. Almodovar does no such thing in this somewhat suspenseful, romantic tale of a young actress, her possessive lover, a film director, his agent and the agent's son. The present forces the characters to explore the past and reveal suprising secrets.
The film was shot in a noiresque fashion adding to its' texture and intrigue.
Penelope Cruz is absorbing playing Lena, a woman struggling to find herself while enduring a suffocating relationship.
This is a must see film. Almodovar is at his best!
