Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Laetitia K — 10 Mar 2010
It is not almodovar's best film by a long short. Since I became introduced to his work I have grown accustomed to expect films seeped in imagination and lasciviousness, calling up an archetypal or even allegorical Spain of deep reds and oranges hues.
This film is not nearly as campy or playful or well 'Almodovarian'. It is good, and thought the pace drags at times and the temporal intercutting is not as polished or engaging as it is in other films of his such as Habla Con Ella, it is not a complete disappointment.
Penelope Cruz is as usual outstanding and other Almodovar muses such as Liuis Homar and Blanca Portillo help to inject some much needed life into this film. Ultimately the script is this films weakest part.
It is not fresh enough to captivate one for the overly long running time of 127 minutes. It uses many Almodovar conceits and in this film unlike Bad Education for instance, the plot of a film about making a film is to shaky to support the actual main plot.
Worth seeing but not high caliber.
