Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Darren S — 28 Mar 2010
Excellent acting. Check. Very well written. Check. Worth reading the subtitles. Check. Penelope Cruz's balloons. Check.
I had no idea what to expect or even what this movie was about when I watched it but it quickly grabbed my attention and never let go throughout. The standout feature of this film for me was the dialogue, even thought I had to read it. I loved hearing Diego and Harry plan out that script for the vampire movie: a family of vampires who run a blood clinic and who manufacture the finest sunscreen. I would go see that movie.
Watching Harry's story unfold, I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. There was real original content here and it's worth checking out.
It only gets a little bit corny in some areas, particularly when Harry finds out Ernesto has tampered with Girls and Suitcases. But I kind of liked that; I admired Harry's love of his craft.
