Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Nathaniel H — 12 Dec 2009
Minor Almodovar, which is still Almodovar (sort of). The last ten years have seen him on a dazzling run of creativity starting with All About My Mother and including Talk To Her and Bad Education. He wraps up that winning streak with Broken Embraces, an impeccably crafted, smartly-written (and a shade or two darker than expected), and well-acted (boy does the camera love Penelope Cruz!) picture that's lacking in spice and raw excitement.
I wouldn't call the movie boring, but at times it's perilously close. It's absent the colorful, flamboyant, prurient, subversive ingredients that make the Spanish director's movies so tasty.
This is Almodovar stripped down to his rudiments.
