Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Nick D — 15 Dec 2009
From our greatest filmmaker working today, another multi-layered feast of filmmaking mastery. Cruz is luminous and moving...ya gotta see her in this red outfit, lip-synching her goodbye to her rich lover to her own image projected on the screen.
There are dozens of equally arresting visual pow-pow-pow images: the blind man feeling a slow-mo of the final kiss before the accident that blinded him; a slow pan and cross fade of her X-rays; the hot pink of the harridan in the film-within-a-film.
.. on and on, Almodovar feeds us movie-drenched movie shots, grabbing Hitchcock, complete with Bernard Herman, and veering back to Douglas Sirk, always with his own brand of warmth, family, humor and modern spirituality.
I love him.
