Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Robert T — 03 Jan 2010
Very satisfying, if not transcendent. Extremely complex plot with lots of odd little unexplained details (who ripped up the photos? who was driving the van? if the rich guy knew about severine, why didn't he recognize her when she was his secretary? or did he?).
But a moving disquisition on father-son relations, with a bit of an arty subtext--lots of references to Almodovar's cinematic fathers (Hitchcock, Lang, etc.).
