Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Jenny Y — 06 Jan 2010
Almodovar's style has become very refined, and it is definitely a double-edged sword.
On one hand, this film finds the auteur in top form as a director, offering some of his finest old-Hollywood moments of operatic melodrama. He also seems more willing to use the craft of film making in service of the art, making for some great edits and beautiful (if a bit on-the-nose) shots.
On the other, it is lacking in inspiration and the raw, sometimes amateur quality of his earlier work. The first and third acts especially read like a parody of his repertoire, right down to a "twist" that manages to be entirely predictable (taken as a given, in fact,) and still feel tacked-on.
