Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Stephen L — 06 Jan 2010
I'm beginning to think there isn't an Almodovar film of less than 4 stars' worth. While not the very best in his catalogue, this is a finely crafted piece in which Almodovar cleverl keeps all the balls in the air & moving.
Using his favourite format of a film-within-a-film, there is a magnificent seen where film & reality simultaneously exist. Cruz and the delicious Diego light up the screen and the supporting cast is brilliant.
I'm not exactly sure of the significance of the meaning of 'broken embraces' of the ripped up photographs, nor did I get any of the references to other films, nonetheless this is great story telling.
I want to see "Chicas y Malatas"!!!! :D.
