Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Devin L — 08 Jan 2010
A few years after VOLVER , Penelope Cruz reteams with her man Pedro Almodovar for Broken Embraces, a dark, twisted, Hitchcockian drama. Im not even going to try and explain the plot. That's how his movies are but it is complicated and clever.
Penelope, along with other familiar faces, give perfect overly dramatic performances. The ending dragged a little for my taste but it ended on a great note. The movie is bursting with color and symbolism as Pedro tends to do.
A tale of fathers, sons, lovers, loss, revenge and catharsis. Also an ode to movies in general and our boundaries between fiction and reality. We all have two sides to us. If America could take just a little from Almodovar then they'd be churning out a lot more better, detailed material.
