Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Edward P — 18 Jan 2010
The great Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar has released some brilliant films over the past decade, such as All About My Mother, Talk To Her and Volver, just to name a few.
With his new film however, about a blinded filmmaker (Lluis Homer) who recounts the events of passionate and doomed love affair he had with a beautiful young star (played by the ever gorgeous Penelope Cruz) to his young assistant (Alejo Sauras), Almodovar seems to be just making a film without any real interest in his characters or story.
In fact it's the film within a film, with it's strong and vibrant color scheme and a story that comes across as equally tragic and hilarious, that seems more like the Almodovar audiences have come to know and love.
