Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Michael O — 02 Feb 2010
Not sure where this film ranks with the rest of Almodovar's work. The reason I wonder is because I can't help but feel like this was a low-key effort on his part compared to the cunning explosion that was the last decade of his films. Yet what keeps it a favorite I'll probably see a few more times is his ode to those great films he's made these past few years; his muses; his inspirations; and it all plays out neatly and wonderfully due to the fact that he's a bona fide storyteller like no one else.
The final shot of the film certainly ranks among the best of his career and I'm sure I'll always remember it.
