Although this is pulpy, melodrama ( mixed in with class disparity, art vs commerce, betrayal, jealousy), Almovodar is able to infuse the camera work with such passion, and color that you almost forget you are watching an episode of guiding light.
..almost. Penelope Cruz is really a great actress, and here she is able to emote so well, she really captures a person caught between much stronger forces of nature. The story moves at a good pace, and should probably be seen on blu-ray.
