Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Leon T — 28 Apr 2011
Almodovar keeps mixing up primary colors in his movies--the color schemes aren't a turn-off--and prurient interest and camp and soap opera and sordid narratives. In this movie he's got Penelope Cruz looking like Audrey Hepburn (and Marilyn in one scene) and playing a woman of tragedy--does he expect anything more than a reaction to the sleaze? If he's got a ready-made audience it's one that thinks his euro-trash style is a sign of genius.
His canon includes a movie with one of the best titles ever dreamed up: "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown." But not recommending "Broken Embraces.".
