Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Asif K — 26 Sep 2011
Not necessarily *masterpiece* Almodóvar, but pretty damn close. I suppose the narrative is slight in terms of the director's usual films, but it's no less powerful for that. A relatively straightforward plot that works well thanks to brilliant characterisation and superb performances across the board, the film is probably more rewarding if the viewer has knowledge of cinema and how it works.
Broken Embraces could be said to be a love letter to the craft, as well as to Penelope Cruz (who does fantastic in her film within a film, where she's called upon to give 'good', 'perfect' and 'bad' takes, so the layers of complexity involved are quite something).
Warm, funny, poignant and very interesting.
