Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Mikhail B — 21 Feb 2012
A movie director (Lluis Homar) falls in love with one of his actresses (Penelope Cruz). Their affair becomes known to her husband who produces the film. He terrorises his wife and threatens to stop financing the movie.
After the shooting of the movie is over, the two leave for a remote and wild place, and are forced to return when they find out the screening of the movie was a failure. When they arrive, their car gets a hard hit by a SUV, the girl dies, the director loses his sight.
Later on, in the conversations with his wife and the son, he finds out the film was remastered, on purpose, to make it look like a failure. The blind director gets back to the cutting table to reunite with his loved one and turn the movie back to its perfect, original condition.
The clever way this story is told (it starts from the end, when the director is already blind after the car crush) makes myth and reality diverge, and turns out into a thriller.
