Review of Broken City (2013) by David T — 15 May 2013
Oh man, I've never seen a Noir like this. I'm just mind-blown right now. A very inspiring and orgasmic tale for noir fans. I can't even remember the last time Mark Wahlberg and Russel Crowe both starred in a good film.
Crowe has always been the good guy and taking a vicious role like this is just perfect for him. He's just nasty and amazing. We've always love Mark as badass. and in this film he's not just a tough guy with no brains, his character is deeper.
His character have so many layers. This film is a remarkable breakthrough in the Noir genre. It re-invents the private eye in the modern world. Forget about Shaft, there's a new guy in town. And whoever said that private eye stories are a thing of a past, better think again.
This also has a very good script, got lots of great lines and dialogues. It's very witty and ironic. Some cliche plots but it's more than that. It goes deeper and deeper that what you first thought it would be.
I read a lot from the reviews that the loose-ends in the film is not an average audience. I'd say, use your knockers, not all films spoon-feeds the whole story. You just have to pick up all the pieces and it's all there.
Though the ending could use some work. It doesn't follow the momentum from start of the film. If you are looking for a good noir film, this one's for you. What could be more dirtier to spice up the plot than good ol' politics.
