Review of Brokedown Palace (1999) by Donna . — 07 Jan 2008
I love this movie and it's such a shame that it is so underrated.
The film teaches you to be more humble and grateful for everything that you have. This is because the film starts with Darlene and Alice graduating from high school, with their whole lives in front of them; college, career, marriage, family. Then suddenly and unjustly this is put to an end.
The saddest scene for me was when their friends visit them in prison, telling them about their lives, while Darlene and Alice look on with sadness, their own lives having ended. So this movie has always been about loss to me and the importance of living your life to the full, as well as a cautionary tale of innocents abroad.
Claire Danes gives a brilliant and powerful performance here, walking away with the entire film.
