Not bad, not great. the photography and western landscape is awesome, as is the score. the characters and the story they're in, however, didn't do much for me. from the very start, I thought Ledger and Gyllenhaal were far too polished and clean-cut to be truly believable cowboys.

..even when Jake grew that mustache he looked more like a 70s country singer. you feel sorry for Williams and Hathaway because in their own ways, they're trying to get through life the best they can.

their husbands don't seem to care about anything or anyone but each other, and even when they're together they don't seem especially happy. the story is most certainly a tragedy, and it's made all the more frustrating because so much of what makes it tragic seems avoidable.

overall a film with high points, but I just never got into it or connected with anything in particular.
