Review of Brokeback Mountain (2005) by Deborah H — 19 May 2012
Simplistically and dismissively branded as "the gay cowboy" movie before audiences got to see it for themselves, Ang Lee's gorgeously photographed film is by far the most beautiful and touching love story to come out of Hollywood for a very, very long time.
The tour-de-force performances from his young cast come second-to-one with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, both in exceptional, engaging form, make a believable and handsome couple, whose intense relationship never strains for credibility, supported by an outstanding Michelle Williams and fine Anne Hathaway as the women in their lives.
'Brokeback Mountain' is an incredibly humane, emotive, and complex piece of filmmaking, made with extreme care on the backbone of a well-received short story and stunning script. It is essentially an art house flick that found a mainstream audience, and is powerful enough to stay with you long after the credits have rolled.
Unmissible.
