Review of Brokeback Mountain (2005) by Paul D — 22 Mar 2013
One of those rare films where everything comes together, screenplay, directing, performances, to create a beautiful and stirring work that only gets better with each viewing. Brokeback Mountain skips easily through years without the pacing or story ever being thrown off.
The actors are able to convey so much with a look, and the writers trust them to do so without ever overwriting any scene. This film is so universally relatable that it's tough to understand people not having a connection with it.
Ang Lee's delicate yet visually striking direction focuses on both the visuals and the characterizations, making the film pretty, honest and constantly compelling. Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway are both wonderful as wives in an unfair relationship, and both Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger give the performances of their lives.
Brokeback Mountain was the best film of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.
