Review of Brokeback Mountain (2005) by Quinn O — 15 Feb 2018
Brokeback Mountain is an absolute masterpiece of a film. It not only leaves a lasting personal attachment with the characters but it includes beautiful cinematography that gives the audience a sense of awe and wonder.
Yet sadly, this treasured film has been characterized as nothing but the "gay cowboy movie". This label is not only homophobic and ignorant, but it summarizes only a small portion of what the purpose and plot of the film is.
Even the great Heath Ledger found this to be true when he said "people are very quick in life to label things that make them uncomfortable" and that it "transcends a label". He continues to say that the films purpose of the film is to show to how heterosexual and homosexual relationships are just the way two human souls love each other and that love is strong and pure no matter which gender they are.
I found this to be extremely true that the theme of Brokeback Mountain is beyond sexuality which seems to surprise most viewers. Ang Lee did a perfect job showing the audience that any form of love is deserving of marriage and who are we to decide whether two human and adult people should or should not be together.
