Review of Broadcast News (1987) by Daniel M — 12 Aug 2007
For a while, the film suffers in comparison to "Network." It feels like a lightweight sitcom superimposed over that earlier, bravely critical look at evolving media. But it gets better and better, and it turns on one moment, terrifically acted by Holly Hunter, who reacts with disbelief and horror when she sees video evidence of Tom (William Hurt) committing a grave breach of ethics.
The moment reminds Jane what she stands for, and it reiterates for the audience what the film is all about. The flash of a pretty boy's smile is seductive, but there are some values you cannot compromise.
