Review of Bringing Up Baby (1938) by Jareth S — 13 Nov 2010
This was a case of modern reappraisal being wrong and the original critical bashing being correct. I've sat through this excruciatingly obnoxious attempt at screwball comedy twice and it still isn't funny. I love Howard Hawks and Cary Grant is one of my favorite movie stars, but the strained attempts at humor in this film just DO NOT work. I hate this movie.
Want a great screwball comedy starring Cary Grant & Katherine Hepburn? I'd suggest George Cukor's excellent comedies THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and HOLIDAY as alternatives.
