Review of Bringing Up Baby (1938) by David M — 03 Aug 2012
A zany, madcap, screwball comedy with a quick pace and even quicker dialogue coming out of all the actors mouths. There shouldn't be any shocks here when one misadventure turns into two, then to four, then to eight.
..well, you get the picture. Hepburn and Grant carry the picture, effortlessly jumping between light drama and all-out comedy. This is a different kind of comedy than we're accustomed to today, though it is risque in a lot of ways, especially a scene where Grant exclaims that he's gone gay.
Each actor is fully game for whatever the script wants them to do while director Hawks makes use of each location, wringing out all the staging he can get without being flamboyant in his shot choice. Hepburn's voice can be a bit shrill, but it adds to her character's quality.
