Review of Bringing Out the Dead (1999) by James T — 16 Nov 2007
Scorsese once again proves to me he is one of the greatest filmmakers in the history of cinema. He goes back to this "Mean Streets" and "Taxi Driver" roots to bring us a twisted contemporary Dante's Inferno of a paramedic's nights in Hell's Kitchen.
He films New York City nights with a glittering, nauseating rush while we see Frank the paramedic on the brink of insanity in a hospital that seems to have gone mad as well. Throughout this nightmarish trip we see Frank having to come to grips with those he couldn't save in order to save himself.
Might not be the movie for everyone since the movie doesn't really move anywhere, but that's the point as we see Frank stuck in this limbo as if he is a ferryman on the river Styx. It all fits perfectly in a crazy way.
