Review of Bringing Out the Dead (1999) by Alex V — 08 Dec 2007
Whoa. This one came out nowhere. I like to think of it as Fight Club in an ambulance, with some matching themes, though there are some large differences. Scorsese goes balls-to-the-wall, taking huge stylistic risks with an even larger payoff.
I love th way Scorsese loves New York, just as Michael Mann loves LA, and the love shows in the way he films it. Nic Cage, John Goodman, and Marc Anthony (As a crazy hobo who is constantly visiting the ER! Go figure) deliver some excellent performances.
Scorsese's underrated and forgotten masterpiece.
