Not one of Martin Scorsese's best and probably one of the weakest of his 1990's films, although when you have goodfellas casino and the age of innocence in one decade, it's pretty hard to measure up.

This is a grungy and dirty look at the life of a paramedic in New York, and it's hard to watch this and not compare it to an episode of ER, which is relatively clean and fuss-free. Tom Sizemore, John Goodman and Ving Rhames all provide interestingly contrasted supporting performances, but I couldn't really buy into or engage with Patricia Arquette, which undermines the emotional power of the film.

The weak point in this film is the surrealist aspects, which are only mildly successful in keeping the audience engaged and seem to clash with the gritty milieu Scorsese surrounds Nicholas Cage with.
