Review of Bringing Out the Dead (1999) by Paul M — 19 Oct 2008
Underrated, enthralling look at the streets of New York City from the point of view of a night-shift paramedic (based on the novel and real-life experiences of Joe Connelly). Cage is excellent as Frank Pierce, who is haunted by the loss of one dead girl and in his desperation reaches out to one who is on the way down--to try and save her.
The supporting cast matches him, particularly Goodman, Rhames and Sizemore as his successive partners over one long weekend, providing most of the humor in this surreal black comedy. While not a Scorsese classic, one can't help but appreciate--and marvel in--the amazing visual style he has; how every dolly, fade, pan, zoom and track MEANS something, usually something important.
On the whole, an interesting piece.
