Review of Bringing Out the Dead (1999) by Bryan M — 21 Feb 2009
At least they didn't call this "Ambulance Driver". Usually,Paul Schrader and Martin Scorsese team up to make something brilliant; Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and the Last Temptation of Christ were the results of their previous collaborations. Here, however, the results were just mediocre. Maybe that's because Nicolas Cage is no De Niro, or even Willem Dafoe. Maybe it's because Scorsese tried too hard to show the main character's descent into madness and wind up making it almost unbearable at times.
I might go so far as to say this is one of Scorsese's worst movies, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't see it; even his worst movies are worth taking a look at on some level.
