Review of Bringing Out the Dead (1999) by Peter B — 12 Dec 2009
I expected a non stop bleakness but its got a lot of black comedy in it. Great performance by ving rhames, cage is good but a lot of his performance comes from his appearance. The taxi driver comparisons are there with it being directed by scorsese too but its lighter than taxi driver and doesnt feel as important.
It feels a bit throwaway - the characters are fine if not entirely memorable, the pace is okay and it keeps moving - but it fails to grip you or drag you in. Its worth seein just for rhames tho and also for a dark streak that manages to sneak a lot of unexpected humour in too.
Being a nite owl am a bit of a sucker for flicks set during the nite. Night time is fascinating - so peaceful but it can be frightening too. This film captures the night time well. A good little film that never takes full flight but is still a good watch.
