Review of Bringing Out the Dead (1999) by Jerry S — 20 Dec 2010
A filthy and grimy vision of New York City that hasn't been seen since "Taxi Driver" and will probably never be seen again in any of Scorsese's future work. It feels like Taxi Driver, but a bit more psychotic, even Travis Bickle would tell Frank to get his shit together.
You are able to see the psychotic and haunting city that Frank see's though the ultra stylized cinematography that is vastly different from all of Scorsese's other movies. Nicolas Cage's performance doesn't exactly stay within the realms of reality, which was demanded for the character.
Most of this movie reminded me of a Hunter S. Thompson novel, but you can vividly see Schrader and Scorsese in the background.
