Review of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) by Joe M — 16 Aug 2007
For a movie of its type it's surprisingly and almost confusingly subtle. There are no likable characters and no real redemption found anywhere in the film. There's no one to root for and the lead character is too unsavory to even fall back on anti-hero status. For a lot of people, this would be a hard film to like. In many ways Peckinpah's film is the opposite of George Roy Hill's Newman/Redford classics, working as a rather macabre sort of buddy film.
It's a slow film to start, but - without giving too much away - really picks up once they start, well... bringing back the head.
