Review of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) by Jon C — 19 Jun 2008
Titanic solo gig from Warren Oates. Wazzer plays Benny, a man on the run from something. A man who will sink to whatever low he can for a few dollars and a man with a drink in his hand in almost every scene in the film.
Benny is Sam Peckinpah, of course. This film has a seedy, sleazy majesty that owes everything to Oates' towering performance. Parts of the film drag a little, but overall we see a man who is being forced towards redemption, a redemption that he has no control over.
The blistering shoot out at El Jefe's fortress at the end is classic Sam and Oates is doomed the minute he enters the place. Sam's cinematic swan song in many ways....
