Warren Oats sees his golden opportunity. All he has to do is bring some fat cats some proof of Alfredo Garcia's demise. If he can do that, all of his problems will go away. Oh...but it doesn't work out that way.
Peckinpah presents a man who has reached his lowest point. In a way this is a cousin of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre; desperate men making bad decisions. Whereas all of the rousing story points of The Wild Bunch are exhilarating, this one is much more intimate and not so humorous.
It's as if we're watching Oats stagger into oblivion. The film easily serves as a metaphor for delusions of all stripes.
