Review of Brigsby Bear (2017) by Tim M — 10 Dec 2018
While I appreciate creativity, 'Brigsby Bear' blurs the line between fantasy and reality. Tonally it blazes a path then diverts to another and sometimes comes back to the original in the same scene. It's those kind of inconsistencies which make this feature a dud. I can't complain about the acting, but I did feel like I was being trolled. This is analogous, but you don't help a recovering addict by giving him drugs. Our lead character is in therapy for a traumatic event, and the people that put in there then think it's a good idea to reenact the event with him present. Are you kidding me? I guess it helps when you watch this movie with someone that teaches clinical psychology. I was able to ask, "Would any of this ever happen?" The answer is no which means all that build up that this could happen is gone.
So I know what you're thinking: Let it go enjoy the comedy. You see that's the thing. I didn't laugh. I didn't chuckle. I didn't smile. I didn't acknowledge humor. The premise is an interesting one. Very much like 'The Adventures of Kimmy Schmidt'. The movie, for me, either needed to be completely over the top or a bit more toned back. It failed to walk the tightrope of both. This is one Hubby and Wife totally agreed on. Wife: 3.5/Husband: 4.2; Final Score: 7.7/20.
