Review of Brigsby Bear (2017) by Mathew C — 01 Jul 2018
Saw some other reviewers recommend this film and I honestly kept forgetting about it simply because no one was really talking about this movie. Its a shame that this movie some what fell under the radar to the general public. I went into this film knowing basically nothing and that turned out so damn well because every moment stayed fresh from beginning to the end.
The movie revolves around the main character Kyle who grew up watching a fantastic show involving none other than Brigsby the Bear. His life however gets flipped upside down and he stumbles through his new reality. He desperately tries to conclude the story to his favorite television show in the process.
Kyle is played by James Pope who does an amazing job for the role he's given, in saying that its almost a predictable role if you are familiar with any of his Saturday Night Live sketches or old YouTube shorts. Not only is Kyle played perfectly the whole cast did an amazing job and really make you get invested in who they are and how they play a role in Kyle's life. I don't want to spoil to much of this movie for anyone because I honestly believe that it is best viewed with a fresh perspective. However I do think that there is a good undertone about the deeper meaning too media shaping who we become as a person and how we hold it in a personal reflection to ourselves.
Its hard talking about my favorite scene without spoilers but lets just say when Kyle leaves the first set the movie really picks up in its more dry dark humor. Where the movie had me disliking any part would actually probably be when we see Andy Shamburg's role. Its odd to say since the studio of the film was his studio but his character just felt like it was on a different tone in comparison with the rest of the film. The set designs were really good and I like the directors approach to basically every scene.
I recommend this movie its got the humor where it needs it and it has a message deep enough to dig out but easy enough to enjoy. Also getting some nice Mark Hamill is always welcome, especially when he gets to do some voices.
