Review of Bright Star (2009) by Savannah M — 22 Jun 2010
My favorite films are period pieces: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and The Young Victoria to name a few. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie also. It will not steal Pride and Prejudice's gold medal, but it could definitely win a bronze.
Ben Whishaw, though I have only seen him in one other film, Brideshead Revisited, has proven himself to have great potential. His portrayal of Keats was superb. However, I wish he wasn't so frail looking.
The last I had seen of Miss Abbie Cornish was her rather small role in A Good Year, opposite great talents Russel Crowe and Marion Cotillard. In that movie, I have to say, I didn't see a star. In Bright Star, though, I saw her talent.
Her performance was just as memorable as Mr. Whishaw's. Lastly, Paul Schneider as the antagonist was a great fit form him. A little surprising since I am used to seeing him in Parks and Recreation with Amy Poehler, but he held his own.
I would definitely recommend this movie to true cinemagoers, but I wouldn't say it is for everyone. Director Jane Campion well done once again and I can't wait for your next film.
