Review of Bright Star (2009) by Ray P — 31 Jan 2010
British poet John Keats wrote some of the most beautiful poetry and prose ever created --- only to have his celebrity found after his untimely death at the age of 25 from t.b. The muse for much of his work --- and the inspiration for the poem "Bright Star", was his neighbor - Fanny Brawne. Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish are terrific in bringing these real characters to life.
Director/Writer Jane Campion has brought this tragically doomed love story to life with a touching and deeply moving film that focuses on the last few years of Keats' life. What surprises me most is how this film has all but been forgotten (kept down?) by the Hollywood system come awards time. The Academy is set to make Kathryn Bigelow the first female to win best director --- yet this acclaim should have gone to Jane Campion years ago for "The Piano". "Bright Star" shines far brighter than the mediorcre "Hurt Locker" and the few who have been fortunate enough to see it should feel the same way. Well done, Ms. Campion.
